To secure International Standards Organisation recognition, Peel had to meet strict criteria around an energy management framework which seeks continuous improvement and clear performance targets. Many of these were already in place within Peel Land and Property, and the annual savings from energy measures across the Peel portfolio since 2009 has now passed £1 million.
David Glover, Operations Director, Peel Land and Property Group, said: “We are delighted to be awarded ISO 50001. This recognises the commitments we have made over a number of years in terms of our energy use and carbon emissions. We are determined to continue to lead the way in the design of new low-carbon facilities as well as review how we operate our existing properties.”
Peel’s ISO 50001 status was independently certified by Lucideon, an international provider of sustainability assurance and management systems certification. Among the Peel premises to form part of the audit were MediaCityUK, EventCity, Lowry Outlet and Gloucester Quays.
Tim Watts, Operations Manager, Assurance, Lucideon, said: “In the course of the four-day onsite certification audit, it became clear to me that the energy management system at Peel is a long-established process which has widespread support from the boardroom to the facilities teams. This was reflected in the considerable number of completed energy-efficient projects which I was able to observe during my visit, and the professionalism and dedication of the staff involved.’
Peel’s strategy is aimed at benefitting occupiers directly through lower energy costs and a higher quality working environment.
Richard Bowden, Managing Director for Bupa UK, one of Peel’s largest occupiers, said: “We are committed to reducing our environmental impact which is why Peel’s work on energy efficiency is so important to us. This year, we have a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint by 20% from 2009.
“Our move to The Regent at MediaCityUK will help towards meeting our targets to be more sustainable through energy efficient design, as well as helping us to develop more efficient ways of working so we can provide an even better service for our customers.”
Steven Nanda, Managing Director of SPIE Industrial Services, said: “As specialists in our field, SPIE UK is committed to developing and improving building performance with the emphasis on green technology and energy management. In Peel, we have a landlord who shares these same values and responsibilities demonstrated by their hard work and dedication in achieving the ISO 50001 accreditation. As a tenant of Peel’s, it is apparent that their designs, structures and facilities are all focused around creating an energy efficient working environment.”
Douglas Brash, Managing Director of SPIE Building Services and Executive Director for CSR, added: “The ISO energy standard that Peel has been accredited aligns perfectly with SPIE’s CSR policy, particularly in terms of our commitment to reducing and eliminating impact on the environment. Furthermore, it demonstrates the synchronicity of our working practices and focused approach to contribute towards a more sustainable future.”
