Local BBC radio stations in the North West including BBC Radio Manchester based in MediaCity are launching changes to their schedules from Monday 27 November.
Last year the BBC shared plans to put local information at the heart of the online experience with greater news provision for 43 areas across England. This means more original journalism and in-depth investigations with 130 additional journalists including a team of 70 investigative journalists across the country.
With additional investment into local online journalism, more frequent updating of stories and greater prominence on the BBC News app we are reaching more people with the local news that matters to them. Online traffic to BBC Local news stories in England is up by 21% over the last three months compared to the same period last year – which means on average 14.8 million unique browsers accessed our stories – up 2.6 million on the same period last year.
We said there would be schedule changes to afternoon, evening and weekend schedules for all 39 stations including BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Radio Cumbria, BBC Radio Lancashire, and BBC Radio Merseyside.
Most of the voices in the new schedules will be familiar to listeners with some taking on new shows and, or areas. Breakfast, mid-morning and sports programmes remain largely the same and local to each radio station.
Kate Squire, Senior Head of Production for BBC North said: “These new schedules are just a part of the exciting local offering we have in store for listeners. With a stacked line-up of presenters who are passionate about the areas they live in, new programming that better reflects audiences across the UK, and a brand-new investigative journalism team coming soon – we’ll be giving audiences a top-notch range of broadcast and online content that’s more local than ever.”
